No Halloween Candy for Fat Kids says South Dakota Woman

“It takes a village to raise a child” says an anonymous South Dakota woman who has decided to join the war against obesity by singling out kids who SHE deems as overweight. How you ask? By only handing out Halloween treats to "thin" kids. The concerned citizen revealed her plan during an interview on a North Dakota radio show. When asked why she wrote the note, the woman stated that she is disappointed in her village and says she thinks it is irresponsible for parents to send their kids out looking for free candy. She goes on to say, "“My hope is that you will step up as a parent and ration candy this Halloween and not allow your child to continue these unhealthy eating habits,”.

 My 2 cents: Wow, lady. I commend your concern for the health of our nation's children but I take issue with the way you choose to do this. In fact, your intention seems rather malicious to me. How are you going to give one child a piece of candy and hand his or her friend/cousin/sibling a fat note? You should be concerned about their emotional well being as well as physical. This is discrimination and abuse. Yes, you have the right to give your candy to whomever you choose but you do not have the right to be mean to children. Oh and did I mention that you won't anonymous once you pass out that first "fat" note? Just a clue in case you hadn't considered this.

Man risks life to save beer from burning inferno! What would YOU do for a cold one?

Some folks say there's nothing like a cold one....if you are talking about an ice cold Pepsi, I must agree with ya...but a Georgia man risked his life as he ran, well, walked back into his burning home to rescue a prized possession...HIS BEER!

"I told them to get the kids out and everything, and me myself, being an alcoholic, I was trying to get my beer out," Serpit said. "You feel me?

Walter Serpit, according to News 14 , serving the Columbus, GA area, went back inside the home with the assistance of his cane, to rescue the hapless beers. To this credit, he did this only AFTER ensuring the safety of the other occupants of the home-including 2 children and 5 other adults. 
The fire was extinguished and Mr. Serpit's family is being assisted by the Red Cross. I am not sure if the beers are receiving any assistance.

Now, again I ask, what would YOU do for a cold one?

Man Steals Womans Purse, Gets forgiveness and Free Groceries!

I heard this one K-Love on the way to work on Friday:

A woman was in the supermarket and noticed a man hanging around on the aisle. The man bumped into her on his way off of the aisle. He apologized and moved on. She thought nothing else of it.

A few moments later, as she reached into her purse she noticed her wallet was missing. She instinctively knew where it was. The man who'd bumped into her was still in the store a few aisles over. She walked up to him and said " You have something of mine and I would like it back. You have 2 choices: 1) Be honest and give it back and I will forgive you right now AND buy your groceries or 2) I can call the police right now.

Guess what he did? He broke down and started to cry as he returned the wallet. He confessed that he was desperate and broke with hungry kids at home. What did she do? She forgave him AND bought his groceries-as promised.

Most of us would have called the cops off the rip-period. So, why did she handle it the way she did?

Her answer: Everyone deserves a second chance.

I wish I could say this is going to be one of those deep, philosophical entries that you see on other blogs but…it isn’t. This one is about all the times we’ve been trying to find this place or that place and I realize that we are lost and should probably pull in at the nearest gas station to ask for help. But the husband wants to keep going ‘cause he can “figure it out”. I cannot tell you how much time and gas we’ve wasted on these excursions. And more times than not, I was right. If we’d simply turned around we would have arrived at our destination much faster, happier and with more gas left in the tank.

Yep, that’s all I had to say. So ladies, the next time you and the husband are lost, just remind him of this simple but wise Turkish proverb.

These are 10 rules of life. I agree with them all but realize that I need to practice more than one or two of these. I am sure if you ask the husband, he will say my biggest area of opportunity is learning to forgive without punishing (punishing him lol). To be honest, I must agree. I sometimes have a tendency to extend forgiveness with conditions. I will definitely work on this. What about you? Which of these is YOUR area of opportunity?

Teaching My Son to Look Down

My 7^th grader was recently accused of striking another student during a horse playing incident in the boy’s restroom at Arlington Middle School.  A student was hurt as a result of the incident. He was given 2 days out of school  suspension for this violation. When, asked if he did this, his reply was “Mama, you KNOW me. I did not do this. I had no part in this.” I believed him because we have raised a man since he drew his first breath of independent air. He was declared to be a man while he was yet in the womb. A man—not just a male. He has been raised to believe that a man’s word is his bond-it is all he truly has. Therefore when my son told me he was innocent, I believed him. As it turns out, while he did not participate in the horse playing , he did involve himself. How? He walked over to the injured young man to make sure that  he was okay and to see if he needed immediate medical attention. THAT is how we have raised him—to be honest at all time and helpful whenever possible.

After he was falsely accused and sentenced, he decided that he would no longer be the good Samaritan, feeling as though this act got him into trouble. We have counseled him otherwise. We have counseled him to not let this incident tarnish his love for others and his heart’s desire to help and make a difference. He has decided that he will still be on the look out to look down—so that he can continue his mission to help others up.

Kindness Matters

I believe kindness matters, if only to me. This quote brings to me a lifestory that happened years ago. My husband and I were living in Atlanta and , as was and is the norm there, we were stuck in traffic. Not only were we stuck in traffic but were in the middle of a heavy rainstorm. I looked up and saw this young lady running down the sidewalk. She had no covering to speak of, no umbrella, raincoat, not even a plastic bag. My heart felt sad for her-then I looked down and saw my own umbrella. As the light changed and we started to roll, I tossed the umbrella out to her. She did not see it at first, but then I saw the recognition and joy on her face. That feeling I got was priceless! Kindness matters!
